Which is the best lawn mower?
To find out, we have several devices subjected to a large lawn robot comparison 2019. The market of robotic lawnmowers is growing continuously and is getting confusing. Therefore, we would like to give you an overview of the best commercially available models and will regularly publish new reports and customer experiences with the individual robots here. Good mowing robots are already available under 1,000 euros. For very large lawns or stronger slopes on the site, however, a higher investment from 2,000 euros is recommended.
Note: Our comparisons are based on different sources of information, such as technical data, customer opinions and real lawn mowing robot tests by Stiftung Warentest and other renowned institutes. More about our evaluation process.
Modern devices use almost exclusively lithium-ion batteries. Only occasionally are nickel-cadmium batteries used.
Most robotic lawnmowers work very quietly.
For comparison, vacuum cleaners are around 70 dB, an arterial road at 85 dB, petrol lawnmowers at 95 to 100 decibels.
The maximum slope that this lawn robot can handle, expressed as a percentage. For example, 35% means that the difference in height is 35 meters on a 100-meter horizontal route.

What exactly is a robotic lawnmower?
They come in a futuristic design and take their owners from the regular mowing, which occurs again and again in the summer. A robotic lawnmower offers you a special comfort by mowing your lawn independently and without human guidance. Unthinkable a few years ago, it is now easy to mow your lawn completely autonomously with the help of a robot so that you can make more use of your free time in summer.
Once correctly installed and configured, the little garden helper mows the entire lawn independently at the set times. Most models rely on a so-called limiting or orientation cable, which is laid on or in the lawn and indicates to the robotic lawnmower in which area he is to mow.
For whom is the purchase of a lawn robot worthwhile?
In summer, the grass usually needs to be mowed weekly, which is time-consuming and exhausting, depending on the size of the lawn. Already with small plots of land, therefore, the purchase of a robotic lawnmower can pay off, which will relieve you of this often annoying gardening. The larger your garden, the more rewarding the investment in an automatic lawnmower. Even during your vacation, you have such a perfectly mown lawn. The only requirement for a robot is just a suitable garden.
Advantages of lawn robots
1. Automatically recharges
2. Mowed grass remains as a mulch on the surface
3.Theft protection u. a. by alarm system and PIN code
Disadvantages of a robotic lawnmower
1. Most models require a high installation effort
2.Not suitable for all lawns
3.Rather suitable for shorter lawns
For which lawns and gardens are robotic lawnmowers suitable?
Mowing robots can now handle many different types of gardens. Optimal are free, preferably ground-level lawns, without many obstacles such as trees and shrubs. The installation effort is correspondingly low.
But even winding, hilly or sloping and divided lawns are no longer a problem for most models. Due to the laid boundary and orientation cable, the robotic lawnmower must first be given an indication of where to drive and where to mow. However, the facility is more time-consuming and possibly more complicated with such land.
Are there mowing robots for sports fields?
As explained in the previous section, large, ground-level surfaces are predestined to be mown by a robotic lawnmower. Sports and football pitches can, therefore, be cared for automatically by a robot. The majority of the models, however, are aimed at garden owners with lawns of up to 1. 000 m². For sports fields, therefore, only professional robotic lawnmowers, such as those from Husqvarna, are suitable for large areas of 1,000, 2,000 or more square meters.
Can a lawn robot also mow on slopes?
Even very sloping land can be mowed with a robot. Already from 2% gradient, the expert speaks of slope. If you own a hillside property, you should definitely determine the highest slope before buying. For example, if the difference in elevation of your property on a 10-meter horizontal path is 1.4 meters, this equates to a gradient of 14%.
All models can easily negotiate inclines up to 15%. Most lawn robots make slopes between 25 and 35%, some even up to 50% and more. It should be remembered that the manufacturer’s specifications are maximum values that the mower can only meet under optimal conditions. As a precaution, choose a robotic lawnmower model designed for even steeper slopes to avoid difficulties.
How does a robotic lawnmower know where to mow?
In most cases, the area to be mowed is limited by a buried or an inductive power cable laid by means of fixing clamps. It starts and ends at the charging station and runs as a loop around the entire lawn and around large obstacles such as bushes and shrubs. The cables are invisible to the lawn within 2 to 3 weeks.
The robot recognizes this limitation and thus works its way without any intervention. Depending on the device, there are also orientation cables that guide the robot over sidewalks or through passages to other lawns.
Are there also robotic lawnmowers without boundary wire?
There are some robots that can do without the installation of a boundary wire. They recognize the area to be mowed with so-called grass sensors. However, these devices are rather rare and only suitable for optimally designed lawns.
High-quality robotic lawnmowers also have crash sensors to detect, for example, levels and boundaries. As soon as a wall, another obstacle or a lawn edge is detected, the loopless lawn robot automatically changes its maze direction.
The big advantage with this robotic lawnmower is the trouble-free installation. It is in fact not necessary: the lawnmower can start immediately. The only downer is the lack of a charging station. If the battery of the robot mower is empty, it must be recharged manually by the owner.
And another advantage is not to be forgotten: The wireless robotic lawnmower can be used anywhere. You can, for example, mow the local garden and allotments. And also the alternating use among neighbours is conceivable, whereby the costs can be shared and the device pays so much faster.
What pattern does a robot mow?
There are several strategies robots use to mow the lawn.
With lawn robots, there are various strategies for how to cut and mow the lawn. The most common mowing strategies are:
1.Free movement pattern (random driving with occasional changes of direction)
2.Ride in parallel lanes (as with conventional lawnmowers)
3.Spiral trip (the robot drives in an ever-widening circle)
Even though the lot is completely mowed a bit faster due to the parallel drive in most cases, the first mowing strategy has proven itself in practice, which is why the majority of robotic mowers work according to a random pattern of movement. The cut of the lawn looks a bit more even and therefore more natural.
Does a robotic lawnmower need to be charged regularly?
Lawn robots derive the required energy from a rechargeable battery, which in most cases is automatically recharged at a charging station. If the battery is running low, the robot automatically returns to the station to recharge. You as the owner do not have to worry about charging the lawnmower.
How safe are robotic lawnmowers?
All devices have various safety features to minimize the risk of injury. Depending on the equipment more or less sensors are installed. Above all, lifting and tilting sensors ensure that all knives of the robot stop immediately when lifting, tipping or driving over objects. In addition, depending on the model, additional sensors and functions increase the safety of a robotic lawnmower.
What must be considered during installation and setup?
Most robotic lawnmowers work with the aid of a boundary wire. Unlike any other lawnmower, a robotic lawnmower usually requires an increased installation effort. So first, a suitable location for the charging station must be found, which is located near a power outlet and has sufficient space. If possible, the lawn robot should not be exposed to direct sunlight or weather conditions.
Afterwards, the boundary wire must be laid in the entire garden, which is to be mowed. Optimally, this happens just below the lawn to avoid pitfalls. Most are included in the delivery cable and pegs to limit the specified by the manufacturer lawn can. Due to many obstacles around the loops, or in the case of winding lawns, however, it may happen that the supplied installation material is not sufficient. In this case, an optional extension kit is required.
Are special preparations necessary for using a lawnmower robot?
In some gardens, preparations are definitely recommended or necessary. In some cases, the elimination or at least the widening of bottlenecks is an important prerequisite for the use of the robotic lawnmower. If the device is to work close to the edge and you do not want to work with the trimmer afterwards, the laying of lawn edge stones should be considered.
How often does a robotic lawnmower mow the lawn?
While a normal lawnmower is used on average every one to two weeks in summer, robots mow the lawn continuously at shorter intervals. So he is always kept short and always looks well-groomed.
The exact days of the week and times at which the robot should do its work can be defined in the settings. For example, it is possible to mow it only when you are away from home – very quiet models optionally even at night.
So you can play after-work or at the weekend undisturbed with your children on the freshly mown lawn carpet.
Can a robotic lawnmower mow separate lawns?
If your garden consists of several lawns, a connecting wire or Search wire between the individual surfaces are laid. Based on this orientation cable, the robotic lawnmower finds its way to the next mowing area. Many, but not all, robotic mowers support such multi-zones.
In the menu of the robot, the existing zones must then be configured. It is sometimes possible to determine which zone should be mown or more frequently mowed. If two surfaces are connected by a narrow lawn passage, the lawnmower varies from time to time to his path to mow this connector optimally.
Can a robot also mow lawn edges?
Depending on the setting, the lawn robot can move beyond the boundary wire and mow the edges. For this purpose, a precise installation of the cable is essential. Some robot casings are also designed to cut lawn edges particularly well, so you do not have to do any reworking. The manual will tell you if your robotic lawnmower has a special edge mowing function.
Mow a lawn robot even in the rain?
Some units have a built-in rain sensor and automatically detect when it starts to rain. Depending on the model, the automatic mower then moves back to the base and refuses to work until the rain is completely over or a certain drying time has been completed. Or he acts according to the settings you have specified and continues mowing even when it rains. There are also mowing robots that are rainproof and therefore can be used in any weather.
How good is the cross-sectional view when using a robotic lawnmower?
Robots mow the lawn at very short intervals and therefore only cut the grassy tips. As a rule, several cutting blades are used, which are attached to a rotating disk and cleanly separate the blades of grass. The resulting cut image is often excellent. However, it is important that the blades are always sharp.
What does a robot do with the cut grass?
Mowing robots are pure mulching mowers, a collecting basket or a collecting function are not available. The grass clippings, also known as mulches, are left on the lawn and return vital nutrients to the soil. Your lawn will not only look better when using a lawn robot but will also be healthier. Due to the frequent mowing, the shortened grass is always very fine, so it does not bother any more and your children can easily play on the lawn.
How often do you have to change the blades of a robotic mower?
Like traditional lawn mowers, robotic mowers also need to be serviced at regular intervals. Especially important here is to replace the cutting blades from time to time. Due to the constant use of the small knives wear much faster than the large sickle knives and should, depending on the model, every two to three months to be renewed. Matching blades for your robotic lawnmower are easily available as accessories.
Can a robotic mower also be mowed at night or at the weekend?
The operating times of gardening tools are regulated in the “Equipment and Machine Noise Ordinance”. This includes robotic mowers, which may only be used in densely populated residential areas during the day. If the distance to the neighbours is greater, you can have most robots mowed at night, because their volume is far below that of conventional lawnmowers.
The following features are offered by manufacturers in your devices:
PIN code / installation lock
The robot is protected by means of a PIN code. Without this code, no settings can be made on the device.
The time lock requires the PIN code to be entered again at regular intervals. Otherwise, the device will become unusable.
When the robotic lawnmower is raised or removed from the property, a very loud alarm sounds that thieves are often deterred.
Robotic robots that have an integrated GPS communication module usually also include a GPS tracker that reports the location of the lawnmower.
Many devices are connected to the supplied charging station and can not be used on any other basis.
Are there robotic lawnmowers with GPS navigation?
For entry-level devices, you are looking for GPS navigation or control in vain. Only with expensive professional mowers for large gardens with several thousand square meters models with GPS module are available, because here the use of GPS makes sense at all. The mowing area is measured by means of satellites and the position of the robotic lawnmower is determined. This way, the autonomous lawnmower can optimize its mowing strategy, as it always knows where it has already mowed. The mowing result is even more even and no unmown areas remain.
Another advantage of an integrated GPS module is the increased theft protection. The communication module is mostly used as a GPS tracker and can transmit the current location to the owner.
What maintenance and care does a robotic lawnmower need?
Suitable robotic lawnmowers can be cleaned quickly and easily with the garden hose © GARDENA
Mowing robots seldom require maintenance. Unlike traditional lawn mowers, which should be cleaned after every use, it is sufficient for this lawnmower type to free it from dirt and grass from time to time. Otherwise, the metal elements on the unit could be subject to corrosion.
It is also advisable to check the blades of the mower from time to time or check it at a workshop and have it sharpened/replaced if necessary. Like the cordless lawnmowers, a robotic lawnmower should not be exposed to excessive cold and, especially in winter, should be stored together with its charging station. Of course, the boundary cables can remain in the ground.
Purchase advice: Tips for buying a robotic lawnmower

When buying a robotic lawnmower many points have to be considered. With our purchase advice, we give you helpful tips to help you find the model that best suits you and your garden. In our extensive robotic comparison robot 2019, you can also directly compare the best devices on the market and their technical characteristics.
Maximum lawn area
Each robot is designed for a maximum lawn area, which he can edit according to the manufacturer. The scope of delivery usually includes sufficient installation material such as perimeter wire and fixing hooks to limit the specified area. Extension sets are usually available as an option, but they are often only used to set more complex limits. Although it is possible to cover larger areas with most robotic lawnmowers, these are no longer mowed optimally if the size and speed of the lawnmower are not designed for this purpose.
Location of the charging station
You should also think about the future location of the robotic lawnmower charging station. In addition to a power supply in most cases, a certain distance to the sides and a flat surface is necessary. In addition, a weather-proof placement, without too much sunlight and rain, advantageous. A very good protection against wind and weather is provided by an optionally available robotic lawnmower garage. If necessary, inform the manufacturer in advance which requirements for the charging station must be fulfilled.
For robotic lawnmowers, the manufacturers rely on two different battery types. The majority of robots have already installed a modern lithium-ion battery, which has a high energy density in a small design and remains functional for at least five years. Although it is more expensive than a lead-acid battery but allows a nearly 10 times higher charging cycle number, resulting in a much longer life. You should, therefore, refrain from lead batteries and look for a model with Li-ion battery.
Battery charging time and running time
Since lawn robots independently drive back to the charging station and recharge, rechargeable battery charging time and runtime play a minor role in these gardening tools. In addition, the times depend on the built-in battery types and their strength or capacity. The annual power consumption is dependent on this, but in any case far below that of electrically powered electric and cordless lawnmowers.
Depending on the residential area and area, you should pay attention to its volume when buying a robotic lawnmower. By mowing frequently, it could be a nuisance to you as well as your immediate neighbours. Fortunately, with a sound level well below 70 decibels, automatic lawnmowers are among the quieter devices in the garden and rarely disturb.
The higher the cutting width of a lawnmower robot, the more mowing he will cut per lane travelled. This is particularly advantageous for large areas. However, a high cutting width also leads to a higher device-width, which can lead to problems in tight spots in the garden. Therefore, determine the narrowest passage before purchasing and then choose the model.
Cutting height/cutting height adjustment
An important function is the setting of the desired cutting height. With this, you can set to which length the grass should be cut when mowing. In most cases, this is done without tools via a rotary knob directly on the lawnmower robot.
The weight and size of a lawn robot are only crucial if you want to use the device on different surfaces that it can not reach on its own. Then it has to be carried by hand from one lawn to the other. Most mowers weigh less than 10 kilograms, but can still be unwieldy due to their size. A carrying handle that some manufacturers integrate into the device is advantageous.
As already described for the cutting width, too large robot dimensions can lead to problems in narrow passages. Therefore, choose a device that can easily pass even the narrowest parts into your garden.
cleaning and maintenance.
Safety functions / sensors
Since lawn robots operate completely autonomously, safety functions are particularly important here. Ideally, they protect children, animals and surrounding objects from injury or damage. Standard robotic lawnmower models, therefore, have lifting and tilting sensors as standard, which stop the cutting blades within a very short time. An integrated obstacle detection ensures that the robot stops and changes direction.
Other sensors are mainly dependent on their own wishes, such as a gradient or rain sensor. Recommended are devices with PIN code and theft alarm.
As a last point in our mower robot comparison, the price-performance ratio flows into the evaluation. Only the relationship of the individual comparison criteria to one another gives you as a buyer the certainty that you will get the best lawn robot for your money.
