Floorstanding loudspeaker – the royal class among loudspeakers
Floorstanding loudspeaker: Slim and tall – these are the ideal dimensions for sound quality at the highest level. On average, one and a half meters he rises in height. Mostly made from high-quality materials, the speaker looks elegant and also has enough resonant space for impressive sound quality – from clear highs to vibrant basses that can match a bass reflex speaker, also called.
That’s why the eye-catching speakers are also ideal for a 5.0 surround system – the bass is then reproduced by the large stereo speakers. Of course, you can also give 5.1 speakers with it more buzz. But even for music fans, the floor-standing speakers provide a very good stereo sound, which is comparable to high-end headphones if set up the right way up. That is why the most well-known manufacturers of monophonic and stereo floor-standing loudspeakers include such renowned audio experts as Magnat, Teufel, Auna, Ultima, Kombo, Raumfeld, JBL, and Canton. Floor boxes from these manufacturers are usually a good choice and you will find some top sellers among them. Nevertheless, there are small but subtle differences and we would like to explain this to you below.
Let’s start with the indescribable sound of the tower speaker. It depends on the design of the case and the number of speakers integrated into it. These built-in speakers are often called sound transducers or chassis. The case is large enough to place multiple chassis inside and represent a sounding body.
Speakers / Chassis
In a tower speaker, high tones, mid-tones, and speakers have used Basses each played by a separate speaker. This type of distribution is called reusable technology. The corresponding loudspeaker boxes are also called three-way floor boxes. But it is not necessary that only three speakers are built into the housing. It can also be four or more. As a rule, more is invested in the bass range. It may be that two chassis are driven with the low bass tones, while high and mid-tones only operate one loudspeaker at a time.
A voluminous housing, possibly made of wood or pressboard, offers, like a piano or a grand piano, a good sound quality. Especially the basses make their profit. To prevent vibration, the housing walls should also be made relatively thick.

Kaufberatung: How do I recognize the perfect floor standing speaker?
There’s a lot of technology behind such a tower speaker. Do you know this, you are clearly in the advantage and can easily find the right floor speaker for you. For all others, here are a few important technical terms – and thus also decisive purchase criteria in an understandable form – briefly and succinctly summarized.
Chassis is another term for speakers as mentioned earlier. Here you should pay attention to which membrane diameter has the respective chassis. A bass chassis should be at best between 20 and 30 cm in diameter. Two smaller woofers offer better sound quality than a larger one. Also, pay attention to the material of the speaker diaphragm. From a paper, the cone is to be advised. However, good sound quality is provided by a ceramic, aluminum or special plastic diaphragm.
Principle is a technical term in loudspeaker technology. This refers to the reusable construction of the loudspeaker. Above, we’ve already introduced you to the three-way speaker, in which heights, mid-tones, and basses each drive a separate speaker. In the two-way tree, also called the two-way principle, middle and low tones control a common speaker – the second is operated by the high tones. Low-cost speaker systems control only one chassis for the entire frequency range. They are also called broadband speakers. This system is usually not used in floor standing speakers but is more commonly found in low-cost bookshelf speakers or compact systems.
The optimum frequency range of a tower speaker is between 20 and 20,000 hertz. Values above or below can not be perceived by the human ear. Floorstanding speakers that have higher and/or lower values are not worth their money. Put your finger away!
Especially for the passive construction, this value is of high importance because the load capacity is the value, which a receiver may supply to a speaker maximally. Here, a distinction is made between nominal and music resilience.
Rated Capacity: This value should be between 100 and 300 watts at best.
Music Power: It should ideally be between 200 and 500 watts.
Attention: You should always make sure that the rated load capacity is under no circumstances exceeded in a passive system.
We get the efficiency fully on the ears because it indicates how many decibels the floor-standing speaker has in the box. It is measured at a distance of one meter from the box and is at a top model at an outstanding 95 decibels. Average floor standing speakers already score with a value of 85 decibels.
This value is very important. Good floor standing speakers usually have an impedance of 8 or 4 ohms. High-quality models cover the entire range from 8 to 4 ohms. That, however, is reflected in the price. However, it is important that the impedance of your receiver matches that of your tower speaker.
Good sound needs space
Now we have a lot of technical experience. Now, there is basically nothing left to choose your tower speaker. What you should not forget before buying, however, is the space available to you. For such a floor-standing speaker can only bring out its full sound quality in large rooms. In contrast to the floor, the speaker requires a lot of space. A room from 25 m² is ideal, because only then can it be ensured that there is enough space between the individual floor standing speakers. The ideal distance starts at about two meters. In addition, the tower speaker should not be too close to the wall and should not be squeezed in somewhere between the wall and the cupboard or shelf. After all, you do not want your beautiful crystal to vibrate in the cabinet when you turn the bass louder.
What do I have to spend on a good floor standing speaker?
The good sound quality of a tower speaker has its price per se and is already slightly above that of a bookshelf loudspeaker. Good floor boxes are already available from about 120 euros. Two-way systems are available from about 200 euros. Passive systems with three-way technology are around 300 to 500 euros. In high-end boxes, the price spiral is open at the top. For such high fidelity music enjoyment, you may well need to shell out 2,500 euros.
