General buying tips

Frame: The frames are usually made of aluminium and usually provide mounting options for fenders, racks, stands and bottle holders. The rear triangle is rigid, the geometry rather relaxed and allows a comfortable upright sitting position.

Fork: In this price range you will often find spring forks with steel spring and a travel (travel range of the fork) of 60 – 100mm. Some models feature a lock-out feature that locks the fork so it can not deflect (useful when driving uphill or in the city). For others, the spring bias can be adjusted to adjust the hardness of the fork.

Brakes: In the past, up to 500 euros were still often found on entry-level mountain bikes. Now you can find mainly disc brakes, which are characterized by better braking performance and higher reliability even in bad weather. Rim brakes, however, are lighter and require less maintenance.

Circuit: Derailleurs with triple derailleurs and up to 30 gears are standard here. Often, beginner groups of Shimano are installed, such as the Tourney or Altus. The first truly MTB-specific group is the Acera, which is also found on some models.
